DESCRIPTION:Kindly RSVP here  to help our staff provide correct quantities of chairs & yummy coffee.\n  \nWe invite all to join us on Friday\, June 14th at 10:00 am for Diálogo & Café\, a conversation about the creative process and public art with Lisbon street artist\, Bordalo II\, and Michael Benevides\, Fabric Arts Festival Founder (and co-owner at Portugalia Marketplace). The event will include a performance by members of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra (NBSO) featuring a compilation of Portuguese pieces. Also joining us as a special guest is Sarah Jane Mulvey\, New Bedford’s Poet Laureate.  \nThis all-ages\, free event will launch DATMA’s 6th season of art and programming. As a thank you to our attendees\, we will be providing complimentary coffee and lite fair. After the artist talk\, a curator led walking tour of DATMA’s newest public art exhibitions will take place. The event location will be in the lobby of the DeMello International Center\, 128 Union Street\, New Bedford\, MA 02740 in historic downtown New Bedford. Valeu! \n  \nAbout the Artist:\nBordalo II (Lisbon\, Portugal) is a street artist known for his unique and impactful artwork that conveys powerful environmental messages through his creations. His work often centers around the concepts of excessive production and consumption\, wherein he assembles discarded materials\, such as old car parts\, scrap metal\, and plastic waste\, to sculpt thought-provoking animal portraits. By giving life to animals using the very materials responsible for habitat destruction\, Bordalo II highlights the urgent need for environmental conservation and waste reduction.

SUMMARY:Seaport Art Walk Tour
DESCRIPTION:2021 Seaport Art Walk \nThis year’s theme – “Tides and Time” – welcomed artists to submit proposals reflecting or commenting on our ever-changing climate\, whether that be the ocean\, environment\, economy\, politics\, social justice\, etc. This juried outdoor sculpture exhibition has installed selected temporary sculptures along the working waterfront in the Seaport Cultural District for tourists and residents. Sculptures were assessed on their concept\, design\, craft\, and ability to sustain five month lifespan. SUMMARY:More Than a Job
DESCRIPTION:New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center was created in 2016 to present the story of the local fishing industry to the world. The Center recently celebrated its 5th anniversary on the weekend of June 25 with the opening of its new permanent exhibit\, More than a Job. Four years in the making\, the exhibit will provide an introduction to the workings of the fishing industry with immersive experiences including a working deck\, wheelhouse and focsle. The exhibit explores themes of labor\, immigration\, and sustainability includes significant digital storytelling\, Additional 2021 programming will focus on women’s roles in the fishing community.

DESCRIPTION:Sea Scallops: Sentinels of the Deep\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibit presents scientific archival photography using advanced underwater video technology developed by School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) at UMass Dartmouth Professor Dr. Kevin Stokesbury and his research team. The photos will capture the diverse ecosystems of our region’s seafloor and the women in fisheries science conducting this important research. Sea Scallops: Sentinels of the Deep is a public outdoor exhibition displayed on storefront windows on a series of historic buildings in downtown New Bedford along Union Street between Acushnet Avenue and North 2nd Street from June 17 to October 17\, 2021.

DESCRIPTION:Kiosk locations are at the New Bedford Pier and the grass of the YMCA on Union Street. \nFrom June 17th – October 17th\, DATMA will bring works of outstanding photographers from select locations around the world\, the exhibit will feature insightful\, life-sized portraits celebrating women working in the fishing industry. Featured photographers include: Phil Mello presenting photographs of New Bedford fisherwomen; Hyung S. Kim’s photographs of Korean shellfish divers (aka Haenyeo) and Craig Easton’s photographs of English smokehouse workers (aka “The Herring Lasses”). \n
