DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, November 23\, 2021\n12:00 p.m\nVIRTUAL TALK via ZOOM \nFisherwomen: An Illustrated Talk by award winning Scottish photographer Craig Easton\, about his project Fisherwomen that chronicles the work of the “herring lassies” of the past and the women who work in Scotland’s fish processing today. Easton’s work was recently featured in New Bedford as part of DATMA’s Harvester’s of the Deep. \nThe virtual program will be presented by New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center via ZOOM.  To attend the talk\, use this zoom meeting link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88422651769 \n Harvester’s of the Deep: Portraits of Fisherwomen from South Korea\, America\, and the United Kingdom is presented in is in partnership with New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center and is supported by Mass Humanities\, the Mass Cultural Council of Fairhaven and New Bedford\, as well as Mass Development and New Bedford’s Economic Development Council. The Craig Easton’s virtual talk program is in partnership with New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center’s as part of their Women’s Work project\, a year long exploration of the roles of women in the fishing community and is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Women’s Fisheries Network\, the Mass Cultural Council\, and the Dartmouth\, Fairhaven\, Marion\, Mattapoisett\, New Bedford\, and Westport Cultural Councils. \n  \n \nCraig Easton is a Scottish photographer known for exploring identity and connection to place in the documentary tradition. His early career was defined by his groundbreaking Independent newspaper in London\, and he has since gone on to win numerous international awards including the Cutty Sark Award for World Travel Photographer of the Year 2012/13\, as well as the Landscape award at Travel Photographer Award of the Year 2016/17. Most recently\, he was named 2021 Photographer of the Year by the World Photography Organization for his series Bank Top.

DESCRIPTION:September 24th at 11:30am\, join us for a conversation with artist Zimoun. \nInternationally renowned Swiss sound-installation artist Zimoun exhibits his intricate sculpture — 280 prepared dc-motors\, cotton balls\, cardboard boxes 13″ x 13″ x 13 – using motion and sound as part of DATMA’s Water 2021 exhibitions. During this conversation\, Zimoun will discuss his creative process and invite questions from attendees for an open and interactive discussion about his work. \nThis event is a virtual discussion with a live audience. Guests are invited to gather inside the Swain Studio among Zimoun’s installation (in the corner gallery on the main intersection of Union Street and Purchase Street). \n\nDATMA and CVPA require guests to wear masks inside for the event. \n\nAbout the artist:  \nZimoun is best known for his architecturally-minded\, site-specific\, immersive works. A self-taught artist from Switzerland\, he combines raw\, industrial objects with mechanical principles to create hypnotic and visually complex experiences. His work reconsiders the place technology holds in daily life\, referencing the chaos of the modern day\, while retaining the order of minimalism. \nZimoun lives and works in Bern\, Switzerland. His work has been presented internationally\, most recently at the Hayward Gallery London; Museum of Contemporary Art MAC Santiago de Chile; Nam June Paik Art Museum Seoul; Art Museum Reina Sofia Madrid; and Ringling Museum of Art Florida. Dir. of New England Marine Renewable Energy Collaborative\, will discuss “Harnessing Tidal Energy; The Cape Cod Railroad Bridge Test Site.”\n\nJohn will share details about the great potential of this nascent industry & challenges\, and report on MRECo’s Bourne site\, where tidal turbines made by Littoral Power Systems\, a New Bedford company\, are being tested. Tidal turbines spinning in 6-knot water flow can capture a force equivalent to wind turbines spinning in a 400 mph wind. John has an MS in engineering from the U. of Washington; and an MBA from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He actively employs his own renewable energy rowing whale boats.\n\nThis will be a “hybrid” event. We urge that those who join us in-person be vaccinated. Night\, a celebration of all things water. \nMichele’s work explores the beauty and distortion of water\, sunlight\, memories\, and the human figure. Prints of Michele’s work will be available for purchase during the event. Each painting starts in the summer sun with a GoPro\, a waterproof video camera\, which allows Michele to film her subjects (usually friends\, family\, and even herself) underwater. This gives her the freedom to “explore crazy angles” and play with perspective\, often looking up at her model\, which captures natural movement and distortion from below the surface of the water. \nThis event is part of DATMA’s WATER 2021 exhibition series. \nRSVP HERE

DESCRIPTION:New Bedford Symphony musicians Ethan Wood\, violin and Anna Griffis\, viola will play duo repertoire from the 18th to 20th century with selections by Handel\, Sibelius\, Martinů\, and others\, sprinkled with some lively folk tunes and rags. \nThe pop-up performance will take place during July AHA! in conjuction with Water 2021 at Tonnessen Park\, between the Wharfinger Building and the ferry drop-off along the working waterfront on MacArthur Drive adjacent to New Bedford’s Seaport Art Walk. The park can also be found by looking for DATMA’s Harvesters of the Deep photography kiosks along the waterfront. DESCRIPTION:2021 Seaport Art Walk \nThis year’s theme – “Tides and Time” – welcomed artists to submit proposals reflecting or commenting on our ever-changing climate\, whether that be the ocean\, environment\, economy\, politics\, social justice\, etc. This juried outdoor sculpture exhibition has installed selected temporary sculptures along the working waterfront in the Seaport Cultural District for tourists and residents. Sculptures were assessed on their concept\, design\, craft\, and ability to sustain five month lifespan. SUMMARY:Harvesters of the Deep
DESCRIPTION:Kiosk locations are at the New Bedford Pier and the grass of the YMCA on Union Street. \nFrom June 17th – October 17th\, DATMA will bring works of outstanding photographers from select locations around the world\, the exhibit will feature insightful\, life-sized portraits celebrating women working in the fishing industry. Featured photographers include: Phil Mello presenting photographs of New Bedford fisherwomen; Hyung S. Kim’s photographs of Korean shellfish divers (aka Haenyeo) and Craig Easton’s photographs of English smokehouse workers (aka “The Herring Lasses”). \n
