SUMMARY:DATMA joins Movies at the MAC to present\, "Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt
DESCRIPTION:DATMA joins:\nMovies at the MAC\nCommon Threads: Stories from the Quilt\nWednesday\, February 11 at 7:00pm-8:30pm\nin the MAC’s Anne Braitmayer Webb Theater\n$5 per person\, Recommended for ages 13 and up \nDirected by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman • 1989 • United States \nA tremendous\, handmade monument to lives lost to AIDS\, the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt demonstrated that grief and activism together could forge a powerful symbol of resilience. Winner of the Academy Award for best documentary feature\, this moving film—buoyed by an original all-vocal score by Bobby McFerrin—explores the human stories obscured by statistics\, examining the cross section of identities affected by HIV/AIDS\, as well as efforts to combat the stigma\, misinformation\, and political obstruction that deepened the crisis. \nHistory will record that in the last quarter of the 20th century a new and deadly virus emerged and that the one nation on earth with the resources\, knowledge\, and institutions to respond to the epidemic failed to do so. History will further record that our nation’s failure was based on ignorance\, prejudice\, greed and fear not in the heartlands of America but within the oval office and the halls of Congress.\n— Cleve Jones\, The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt \nFULL DETAILS ABOUT THE MAC & EVENT DETAILS & REGISTRATION HERE. \nThis event is $5 to support the operating costs at the MAC\, however if you cannot contribute the $5 admission fee\, DATMA will cover your fee without question. Opening on April 30 and on view through August 9\, the exhibition brings together a dynamic range of work created in response to a shared experience on Faial Island in the Azores. \n“The Same Sea” reflects on the cultural and geographic ties between Greater New Bedford and its sister city of Horta\, Faial—connections shaped by centuries of migration\, maritime labor\, and storytelling. Over the course of a 10-day residency\, January 23 – February 2\, six artists ranging in medium\, who immersed themselves in the landscape\, traditions\, and daily rhythms of island life\, producing work across disciplines that speaks to both personal reflection and collective memory. \n  \nThe exhibition features: \nMason Terra\, painter \nMaggie Felisberto\, writer \nAbigail Marshall\, photographer \nCarley Byers\, filmmaker \nLynne Byers\, ceramicist \nJackie Fournier Se’Ale\, painter \nWorking in painting\, writing\, photography\, film\, and ceramics\, the artists explore themes of place\, identity\, language\, and belonging. From volcanic terrain and shifting seascapes to intimate portraits and poetic narratives\, the works in The Same Sea consider how distance can collapse through shared histories—and how the ocean\, rather than dividing\, can connect. \nLearn about Hotel Papel’s artist opportunities and make sure to apply to their 2027 artist in residency program!
