DATMA’s location is 1213 Purchase St\, Floor 2\, New Bedford\, MA 02740. \nDATMA is proud to present “The Same Sea\,” a group exhibition featuring six South Coast artists that participated in the inaugural Hotel Papel sister city artist residency program. Opening on April 30 and on view through August 9\, the exhibition brings together a dynamic range of work created in response to a shared experience on Faial Island in the Azores. \n“The Same Sea” reflects on the cultural and geographic ties between Greater New Bedford and its sister city of Horta\, Faial—connections shaped by centuries of migration\, maritime labor\, and storytelling. Over the course of a 10-day residency\, January 23 – February 2\, six artists ranging in medium\, who immersed themselves in the landscape\, traditions\, and daily rhythms of island life\, producing work across disciplines that speaks to both personal reflection and collective memory. \n  \nThe exhibition features: \nMason Terra\, painter \nMaggie Felisberto\, writer \nAbigail Marshall\, photographer \nCarley Byers\, filmmaker \nLynne Byers\, ceramicist \nJackie Fournier Se’Ale\, painter \nWorking in painting\, writing\, photography\, film\, and ceramics\, the artists explore themes of place\, identity\, language\, and belonging. (100% tax-deductible – tickets are limited.) \n \n  \n  \nEach spring\, DATMA holds a small fundraiser to help raise money for an upcoming public art project. This unique event gathers guests to focus on a conversation topic stirring on a local level and in the broader art world. This year’s topic surrounds the growing interest in creating community through salon-style gatherings and the yearning for togetherness. But what does that mean\, what does that look like\, and how can one person build a community? \nJoin us to listen and learn from three people who have built platforms offer resources\, inspiration\, and most importantly\, a place to connect- all accomplished without the engine of an institution behind them. Michael Rose\, founder and content creator for New England Art News\, Andy Anello founder and content creator for New Moon Dance Party\, and Zoe “Chilly Dog” Benza\, a contributing content creator for New Moon Dance Party and DJ in the PVD area. \nThank you to local artist\, Shara Porter\, our host for this year’s event at her shop in Dartmouth. This is a ticketed event that includes tasty local bites and complimentary beer & spring wines curated by Anthi. \n  \nAbout our speakers:\nMichael Rose is a gallerist and writer based in Providence\, Rhode Island. Since 2014\, he has served as the gallery manager at the historic Providence Art Club\, where he oversees a complex exhibition schedule spread across three unique galleries. In addition to his gallery work\, Michael curates\, juries\, and judges exhibitions around the region. An active art writer\, Michael authored the popular weekly Inside Art column for local news site GoLocalProv.com from 2021-2025. In 2024\, he founded New England Art News\, a blog and weekly resource newsletter for regional artists with over 2\,300 subscribers. In 2026\, he was nominated by Governor Daniel McKee and confirmed by the Rhode Island Senate to serve on the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts\, the state’s art agency. Michael earned his BA in Art History at Providence College and a Graduate Certificate in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts at New York University.  Follow Michael on Instagram @newenglandartnews and for weekly updates through Substack at www.newenglandartnews.substack.com \nAndy Anello has a background as a visual artist\, performance artist\, DJ\, and cultural organizer. He founded New Moon Dance Party in 2017 to provide a platform for the organization and promotion of radically inclusive underground dance music events in New Bedford\, MA. For five years\, starting in 2020\, Andy and New Moon hosted a party called BodyBodyBody on the first Saturday of every month at the Co-Creative Center in New Bedford. \nNew Moon has also organized dozens of events at venues including Hatch Street Artist Studios\, Umass Dartmouth Star Store\, Riverside Park\, Overhead Arts\, Hippo\, Ropeworks\, Yoga On Union\, and School of Yoga New Bedford among others. New Moon continues to host a monthly party at The Gallery Bar in the North End of New Bedford\, and a yearly roller disco event at Buttonwood Park. Andy is committed to the idea of the dance floor as a transformative space and believes that dance should be free and accessible to all people. \nIn addition to creating community-focused dance events\, Andy also organized a series of quarterly performance art forums in New Bedford called Lunar Teeth from 2014-2019. As a visual artist\, Andy has exhibited work at Sara Meltzer Gallery in NYC\, Dam Stuhltrager Gallery in Brooklyn\, New Bedford Art Museum\, Framingham Art Museum\, and Gallery Ehva in Provincetown among others. Andy holds an MFA from Milton Avery Graduate School for the Arts at Bard College\, a BA from Eugene Lang College\, and a BFA from Parsons School of Design. He currently works full time as a media producer at Brown University. DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 12th\, all-day\, for a walk-thru of a new installation by Taylor Hickey at The Star Store called\, “The Geometry of Spacetime.”\n  \nAll day: 715 Purchase Street\, New Bedford\, MA 02740 \nOn view from June 3 – November 13\, 2026\, “The Geometry of Spacetime” is a sculptural installation featuring artist\, Taylor Hickey’s hand-built forms created from linocut\, paper sculpture\, and LEDs. \nHickey says the following about her new work\, “My work can be found at a crossroad where the cosmological and mathematical intertwine with the sublime and beautiful – where philosophic questions meet scientific inquiry. With this work\, I seek to remind viewers of their place within the vastness of the cosmos. Elements of light and geometry enmeshed with organic\, celestial relief prints call to mind the profound mysteries of our existence – those grand questions of purpose and meaning\, of beginnings and ends\, of infinity – and pay homage to humankind’s endeavor to understand it all.” \nAbout the artist: \nTaylor Hickey is a printmaker\, bookmaker\, and sculptor working out of New Bedford\, Massachusetts. Born in Southeast Texas\, Taylor earned her BA in Drawing and Printmaking from McNeese State University in Louisiana. She went on to earn an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in 2021\, developing a body of work which pays homage to the human endeavor to understand the universe at large. \nPost-graduation\, she has held various positions as a gallerist and arts educator. She served as the Assistant Curator at the New Bedford Art Museum from 2022-2023\, taught Printmaking courses at the MFA Boston\, and continues to teach Drawing Foundations for RISD’s Pre-College program in the summer. In 2023 she was an Artist in Residence at the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park\, and in April 2024 she curated an exhibition\, “Look\, But Look With Love” at the NARS Foundation in Brooklyn\, NY. \n

DESCRIPTION:Wind and Water: Life Above and Below is a new sculptural mobile created by New Bedford sculptor\, Chuck Hauck. We invite the public to join us on June 17th to welcome this new work to the second floor of the library for its two-year exhibition term.\n  \nDetails: \nDate: Wednesday\, June 17\, 2026 \nTime: 5:00 – 7:00pm \nLocation: Floor 2 & 3 of the Free Public Library\, 613 Pleasant St\, New Bedford\, MA 02740 \nMeet the Artist and Library Curator and help us welcome this new artwork to the city. \n  \nAbout the artwork: \nWind and Water: Life Above and Below simulates an ocean-side scene from over a million years ago\, consisting of now-extinct dragonflies\, mantises\, grasshoppers\, and other creatures\, with now-extinct sea predators circling below. Through this mobile installation\, the artist wishes to draw attention to earlier life on earth that now ceases to exist. The mobile will hang in the Library’s Rotunda. \n  \n \nAbout the artist: \nCharles “Chuck” A. Hauck was born in Toledo\, Ohio in December 1958. He graduated from the former Swain School of Design of New Bedford in 1981\, majoring in sculpture\, which continues to guide his lifelong practice. \n  \nAfter college\, Hauck became involved in the Second Street Art Exchange\, a cohort of galleries primarily operated by Swain alumni out of a brick building by Custom House Square throughout the 1980s. Since then\, Hauck has led and supported several of New Bedford’s cultural planning efforts\, including the 1990 Heritage Street Festival and Schooner Race\, and other local initiatives. This particular partnership with the city and the American Schooner Society led to the establishment of Gallery X (currently located in the former First Universalist Church on William Street)\, a venerable and pioneering cultural space in New Bedford’s downtown art scene. Hauck also served as a founding member and the first President of Orpheum Rising Project Helpers\, Incorporated\, a non-profit committed to the preservation and restoration of the historic New Bedford Orpheum Theater. \nIn addition to his support for hundreds of New Bedford-area exhibitions and public programs over the years\, Hauck has been consistently recognized by the Waterfront Historic Area League (WHALE) for his professional restoration of the city’s many historical churches and mansions. His sculptures and prints are part of a number of public and private collections\, including the New Bedford Free Public Library and New Bedford Economic Development Council.

The talk will be followed by a preview of a docu-short by local filmmaker\, Carley Byers\, who beautifully captured footage of Cláudia Furtado in her studio in Faial during the Hotel Papel artist residency program in January 2026. Concluding the talk and docu-short will be a Q&A with Cláudia Furtado\, Carley Byers\, and Lara Harrington the Hotel Papel founder who brought them together. \n \nCláudia Furtado is a visual artist from Faial Island\, Azores\, holding a degree in Fine Arts and New Media. Her work is deeply connected to Azorean whaling heritage and contemporary scrimshaw art\, exploring themes of memory\, maritime culture\, and the historical relationship between the Azores and New Bedford. Through drawing\, engraving\, and interdisciplinary artistic practices\, she approaches themes related to Atlantic identity\, cultural heritage\, and the preservation of whaling traditions within a contemporary artistic context. Furtado has participated in exhibitions and cultural initiatives dedicated to the promotion of Azorean identity and Atlantic heritage.”
