DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park celebrates 25 years of interpretation\, preservation\, and partnerships\, which makes it one of the gems of the National Park Service. In conjunction with the 25th anniversary and DATMA’s Water 2021 series\, park rangers have created a unique walking tour for visitors to enjoy the park. Free and open to the public. The film will be shown outdoors in the National Park Garden. In the event of inclement weather\, we will move indoors with limited seating available on a first come\, first serve basis. Dir. of New England Marine Renewable Energy Collaborative\, will discuss “Harnessing Tidal Energy; The Cape Cod Railroad Bridge Test Site.”\n\nJohn will share details about the great potential of this nascent industry & challenges\, and report on MRECo’s Bourne site\, where tidal turbines made by Littoral Power Systems\, a New Bedford company\, are being tested. Tidal turbines spinning in 6-knot water flow can capture a force equivalent to wind turbines spinning in a 400 mph wind. John has an MS in engineering from the U. of Washington; and an MBA from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He actively employs his own renewable energy rowing whale boats.\n\nThis will be a “hybrid” event. We urge that those who join us in-person be vaccinated. DESCRIPTION:September 24th at 11:30am\, join us for a conversation with artist Zimoun. \nInternationally renowned Swiss sound-installation artist Zimoun exhibits his intricate sculpture — 280 prepared dc-motors\, cotton balls\, cardboard boxes 13″ x 13″ x 13 – using motion and sound as part of DATMA’s Water 2021 exhibitions. During this conversation\, Zimoun will discuss his creative process and invite questions from attendees for an open and interactive discussion about his work. \nThis event is a virtual discussion with a live audience. Guests are invited to gather inside the Swain Studio among Zimoun’s installation (in the corner gallery on the main intersection of Union Street and Purchase Street). \n\nDATMA and CVPA require guests to wear masks inside for the event. \n\nAbout the artist:  \nZimoun is best known for his architecturally-minded\, site-specific\, immersive works. A self-taught artist from Switzerland\, he combines raw\, industrial objects with mechanical principles to create hypnotic and visually complex experiences. His work reconsiders the place technology holds in daily life\, referencing the chaos of the modern day\, while retaining the order of minimalism. \nZimoun lives and works in Bern\, Switzerland. His work has been presented internationally\, most recently at the Hayward Gallery London; Museum of Contemporary Art MAC Santiago de Chile; Nam June Paik Art Museum Seoul; Art Museum Reina Sofia Madrid; and Ringling Museum of Art Florida. The Craig Easton’s virtual talk program is in partnership with New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center’s as part of their Women’s Work project\, a year long exploration of the roles of women in the fishing community and is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Women’s Fisheries Network\, the Mass Cultural Council\, and the Dartmouth\, Fairhaven\, Marion\, Mattapoisett\, New Bedford\, and Westport Cultural Councils. \n  \n \nCraig Easton is a Scottish photographer known for exploring identity and connection to place in the documentary tradition. His early career was defined by his groundbreaking Independent newspaper in London\, and he has since gone on to win numerous international awards including the Cutty Sark Award for World Travel Photographer of the Year 2012/13\, as well as the Landscape award at Travel Photographer Award of the Year 2016/17. Most recently\, he was named 2021 Photographer of the Year by the World Photography Organization for his series Bank Top.

SUMMARY:Walking Book Tour: "A Wind to Shake the World"
DESCRIPTION:Walk along the hurricane barrier discussing the award-winning novel\, written by the late Standard-Times writer Everett Allen\, which features the 1938 hurricane from a local perspective. Allen had gathered first-hand accounts of survivors where the hurricane hit hardest with top winds at 186 mph and waves at 40 feet. Tour guides from South Coast Almanac and Spinner Publications will give participants an understanding of how this hurricane was an urgent catalyst for the massive barrier designed and constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The tour will be held on July 20 at 2pm (rain date July 21). \n  \nThis event is free\, but space is limited. Many of these buildings no longer exist or have been altered\, so the tour will rely on photographs to illustrate the past of New Bedford’s Waterfront Historic District. Some of these images are very rare and may be the only record of buildings long lost to time\, giving a unique look into the changes made to downtown over the years. \nTours will begin at 10AM and 3PM at the New Bedford Free Public Library\, 613 Pleasant Street\, and will cover an area of about 0.8mi.  \nThis is a free event\, no registration necessary; please contact Allie Copeland at 508-979-1787 with any questions.

Frederick Douglass\, John Jacobs\, and Sergeant William Carney all made it. Captain Paul Cuffe\, born free\, was a sea captain\, merchant\, and activist who became one of the wealthiest Americans of African and Wampanoag descent. \nThe tour will end at DATMA’s Safe Station exhibition\, where visitors can explore contemporary artwork about the Underground Railroad and Abolitionism in New Bedford.
