VESSELS in Situ 2020
For six weeks this summer, the city came alive presenting the spirit of our fishing industry on building facades in downtown, New Bedford. Due to the global health crisis, DATMA and MASARY Studios understand that not everyone was able to leave their homes and see the artwork. Now that the exhibition has concluded at its physical locations, we are able to bring a virtual rendition of the exhibition to your home.
Created by MASARY Studios, the project explores the ships of New Bedford as characters in the community’s rich history. The video and sound artwork was displayed at three locations on Union St, projected on building facades every night from June 20th to August 1st, 2020. Responding to the site and fishing community, VESSELS was sculpted into a media poem consisting of an arch centered around the character, folklore, history, and people in and around fishing vessels.
A special thanks to the New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center and to LuminArtz for their instrumental collaboration on the Vessels project. Shout-out to the film crew who truly capture this moment in time, Aram Boghosian and Rob Eckel.
