Logo Design Challenge Exhibition
featuring Our Sisters’ School Eighth Grade

Eighth grade students from Our Sisters’ School will showcase logos they created for a design challenge in partnership with DATMA and New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. As part of their Art/STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) curriculum, students created original commemorative logos that represent the city of New Bedford and celebrate the National Park’s 25th Anniversary. Their designs will be shown in the Park’s MakerSpace during AHA! on Thursday, November 11 — a night which highlights collaborations and partnerships over the Park’s 25-year history.
In collaboration with New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, DATMA hosted a two-day workshop for OSS students focused on learning about and designing for one of the largest national brands in the U.S. — the National Park Service. Joined by NPS Exhibit Designer, Greg Aylsworth, and NPS Visual Information Specialist, Cara Pearson, 8th grade students learned about the history of National Park Service branding and logo design and explored public exhibitions in downtown New Bedford.

On day two, students were joined back in their classroom by Park Ranger Lindsay Compton and DATMA’s Program Coordinator, Amanda Hawkins, and were introduced to their design challenge: create an original logo commemorating a milestone anniversary for New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.
Challenged to think about their city in terms of both history and diversity, students were given the choice to design either a 25th or 50th Anniversary Logo for NPS using Adobe Creative Cloud and other classroom tools. Their final designs will be on display in the November 11th exhibition for New Bedford’s city-wide AHA! Night and later online at datma.org. Join us for some AHA!
