“Art is nothing new in New Bedford. What’s new, especially in visual art, is exhibiting artists with star power.”

2025 OPPORTUNITIES
Call for Art:
Answering our Ancestors at Gallery X
Gallery X invites artists and members of the community to submit work and queer ephemera that honors the joy, hopes, struggles, lives, and stories of the LGBTQIA+ community on the South Coast. How do we honor the queer ancestors who came before us to pave our path? When the world turns toward darkness, how do we let our joy shine?
Artists may submit up to three pieces, both 2D and 3D are welcome. Video work will also be considered. Artists will also have the opportunity to opt in to having their work travel over the next two years in collaboration with DATMA’s Being Seen: Celebrating SouthCoast Pride exhibition to several regional locations.
We are also seeking historical queer ephemera and memorabilia specific to the South Coast area. Do you have any posters, pins, bar coasters, clothing, photographs, and artifacts that celebrate the stories and joy of the Queer community? We want to include them!
HOW TO SUBMIT:
Work and artifacts can be dropped off at Gallery X from May 1- June 1.
Submissions are free for those who identify as LBGTQIA+.
Looking to save time? Print your submission slips ahead of time and have everything ready to go when you bring in your artwork! Please note if you are printing your own submission slip you must use the file below and bring 2 copies to the gallery (1 that will be attached to the piece and a 2nd that is given to the gallery attendant).
This is a non-juried show, all artists and media are welcome.

KATE FRAZER REGO — EXHIBITION CURATOR
“…our lives rocked in the belly of whaling vessels, tucked between the planking of ships. Lovers holding hands in seamen’s pews, secreting away romances between the cobblestones. We are here, have always been. You cannot tell me we don’t exist in the very streets we scraped out knees…”
Kate Frazer Rego is an artist and educator living in the South Coast of Massachusetts. She attended the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Art, where she earned a BFA in Sculpture. She went on to earn her MFA from Boston University’s College of Fine Art.
Kate’s work spans multiple media including sculpture, installation, mixed media, painting, performance and puppetry. Within the past few years, her process has expanded to include her writings which have been published in Anomaly Poetry’s “Tidings” and “Rituals” annual editions. She also hosts People’s Poetry over at the New Bedford Art Museum.
She has been an art educator in public schools and art organizations across the South Coast for the past thirteen years. Her pedagogy focuses on process, building strong studio habits within her students, and art history through a lens of inclusion and social justice.
When she’s not teaching for the Commonwealth, she’s holed up in her studio with a cup of coffee.

Help DATMA create our next project!
Because we are an institute without walls, we don’t get to greet you by a door or hear your thoughts about the artwork we present. We want to hear from you! Tell us a bit about the art that inspires you. What artwork should DATMA present next? Where should art live? These are conversations we wish we could have with you if we met you at one of our projects. CLICK HERE to share your comments and ideas with DATMA’s Program Committee. Your feedback will help shape our upcoming exhibitions.
