Harvesters of the Deep
Women have always played a critical role in commercial fisheries: preparing vessels to go out to sea, processing product for market, running auction houses, and beyond. Working mostly behind closed doors, fisherwomen and their stories are largely unseen and untold.
Harvesters of the Deep shows outstanding photography from New Bedford, South Korea, and the United Kingdom: Phil Mello’s photographs of New Bedford women as fish cutters and office managers; Hyung S. Kim’s photographs of haenyeo, or Korean shellfish divers; and Craig Easton’s photographs of English smokehouse workers known as the ‘herring lassies.’ These award-winning photographers document different forms of fishing and celebrate the heroism of these largely unknown women. To learn even more about New Bedford’s waterfront industries at New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center, where they have both online and in-person exhibitions providing a deep-dive into fishing today.
